This orb was thrown on the wheel in a closed form and carved in an unique shape to fit together like a puzzle. It was fired in a raku kiln with ferric chloride after a light coat of terra sigliata was applied and buffed. The results of such a firing are affected by the temperature, combustibles in the firing, here a horse hair, sugar and feather. After firing, a sealant was applied inside and out to preserve the finish.
This form is suitable for decorative and for small amounts of ashes, as a keepsake urn, a keeper of treasure or other purposes. I think raku is closely related to the process and forces of life - popular fire, clay, dirt, wood, unpredictable. These vessels are low-fired, and thus do not vitrify in the process. They should not be used to hold water for extended periods of time, nor are they food safe. Keep out of the elements and dust with a feather duster, when needed.
The vessel holds approximately 1 Cup (8 fl oz or about 14.4 cu in )and measures 3.5" tall and about 4.5" wide. If used for cremains, one cubic inch is needed per pound before cremation, however, if in a sealed bag, more space is available under the lid, about 25 cu in.
Clean with a feather duster and keep out of the elements.
