A Shyrdak is a complicated by technique and ornamentally expressive product made from felt. It is a multi-coloured carpet, made either in a technique of carved mosaic or with arrangement of a pattern by coloured cord or by applied work. The common size of shyrdak is 2x4 meters but changes in its size depend on the utilitarian purpose and regional peculiarities.
Earlier only natural dyes made from root of common madder, indigo or larkspur were used for dying. Contemporary artists dye the wool, using aniline dyes.
Felt of dark colour is used for a background of shyrdak. An upper layer is prepared by combining two layers of felt of different colours on which an ornamental shape is laid, and this shape is cut out through both layers by a sharp knife. Then the cut-out portions are removed and connected by fasting stitches.
Thus, two shyrdaks with ornaments of mirror image are made. The edges are finished by sewing a curl cord called jeek.
Today this technique is recognised as cultural heritage of UNECO.
