The late Gatewood Galbraith: Legendary Activist, Author, Attorney and Iconic Kentucky Political Figure AKA “The man who brought hemp to Kentucky” and “The People's Champion (1947-2012)
Before his first Campaign for Governor in 1991, few in Kentucky knew that the plant that the federal government had demonized for over 50 years as “Marijuana – Assassin of Youth,” was, in fact, Cannabis Hemp, the most traded commodity in the world until the mid-1800s, and the state's number one crop, industry, and most important source of revenue, for over 150 years.
Very rare and hard to find Political button / pin-back from a rare iconic figure and post 1960's / 70's activist in a less popular time for activism, differences or standing out and sometimes interpreted as suspect with some “us and them polarities” - 1991 just a couple years after Nancy's "Just Say No" catch all neo-Nixon influenced advice for everyone.

Gatewood was widely popular for his unconventional stances and wit, His political life was largely outside of the Democratic and Republican parties influence, control and money associated with belonging to the groups that had the most to buy with. He nearly always trailed in election fund-raising. Galbraith ran for various offices in Kentucky, including Agriculture Commissioner, Attorney General, and for a seat in the United States House of Representatives.
He also had 5 unsuccessful runs for governor of the state – as a Democrat in 1991, 1995, and 2007, as a Reform Party candidate in 1999, and as an independent in 2011. Between campaigns, Mr. Galbraith worked independently as a criminal defense attorney, and he often quipped that "losing statewide elections doesn't pay worth a damn.
He has been endorsed by Willie Nelson and a number of other celebrities, politicians, professionals and people that grew with his career and death and may have been ahead of his time in today's climate, knowledge and more realistic measurements and analysis of many things viewed very differently not that long ago.
Some of his other campaign promises and platforms included: "implementing a freeze on college tuition, a $5,000 grant or voucher provided to motivated high school graduates to any college or vocational school, incorporating more technology into the education process, restoring hemp as an agricultural crop, ending cannabis prohibition in Kentucky, restoring of voting and gun rights of non-violent felons, agricultural market development, stricter environmental protections, recreational and tourism development, water standard enforcement, expansion of fish and wildlife programs, abolition of state worker furloughs, expansion of energy development, Internet access to all counties, abolition of the income tax for those who earn fifty thousand dollars or less, small business tax exemptions, job development, a return investment policy, the establishment of regional economic development offices, marketing Kentucky's signature industries, the prohibition of fracking and mountaintop removal mining."
He raised $100,000 of his $500,000 budget and was endorsed by the United Mine Workers of America, the first time the union had backed an independent.
In the early 1990's, Galbraith and Willie Nelson made a historic trip across Kentucky in Galbraith's red Mercedes Benz Station Wagon that they ran popular with hemp bio-diesel in order to make a positive impact on and spread the word about the potential of the United States' bio-diesel industry.
The trip inspired Willie's own bio-diesel company. "He's smart and funny and he speaks the truth. He's a champion for the farmers and the working men and women of the world," Nelson once said of Galbraith.
Galbraith had been dubbed a perennial candidate for governor of Kentucky as an outspoken proponent of education as well as privacy rights and other civil liberties.
His action items included restoring to the people the integrity, honesty and trust in the government by ceasing the politics of retribution and beginning an era for politics of achievement by allowing the people a chance to do right. He also had planned to restore hemp as a cash crop for the citizens of Kentucky.
Galbraith classified himself as free from any party affiliations, and described himself as free from hidden agenda.
"Only an Independent who doesn't care who gets credit for doing what's right for the people of the state of Kentucky stands the best chance of untying the Gordian Knot and letting both parties operate in the fashion that the well intentioned membership want to work. We're asking you to vote for an Independent who wants to work with you to get the job done," Galbraith was quoted saying.
His pledge was to end the "synthetic subversion" in
his state. Explaining his view of Kentucky's current "electile dysfunction," Galbraith addressed the U. S. Governments nanny-state thought-mind (whom we elected) whose goal is to protect us from ourselves, the concept of sovereign human beings and rediscovering the American Revolution with our voices and our votes.
He also said during his 2011 campaign. - "I'm going to reconstruct Kentucky's government…and we're going to rediscover whether America still has a pulse. I believe that people will come from all over America and around the world [to Kentucky] to see what it's like to live free,"
Galbraith also wrote a powerful book "The Last Free Man in America Meets the Synthetic Subversion". Described as his exploration of what went wrong it our history with hemp, and how the farmer was taken out of the fuel equation when petroleum products emerged.
It is said that until the end, he spoke his mind about industrial corruption and discovering there is more than one reality in life.
Over the years, Galbraith expressed his concern over the wave of political party partisanship, what being an Independent candidate means in relation to that partisanship and how that reflected in the momentum of his campaigning.
A Note from Gatewood:
Friday Morning, December 30th, 2011.
"Another great day in all our lives. Call up someone you love, or would like to, and let them know it! Make a resolution to lift someone's spirit each day and follow through with it. It doesn't take much, a smile, a kind word (words are magic and can create reality) and a desire to be loved yourself because that is what will happen to you when you give your smile. Try it and see. God Bless You All!"
