The design:
Nganabarru (buffalo)
Buffalos were introduced to Arnhem Land in the 1820s by early explorers. You can see some buffalo painted in the rock art around Gunbalanya. These days buffalos can be found in the floodplain and bush. They like to eat grass and are often seen with birds on their backs. Jonathan thinks the birds are protectors, as they can feel when someone is coming and they fly away, this warns the buffalo that a hunter is nearby.
Jonathan currently works at Gunbalanya meats. He has worked there for over 5 years. He remembers the time when they used to hunt buffalo to sell in the shop. The shop no longer sells buffalo meat, however, he sometimes goes out bush to hunt them. When someone has hunted a buffalo there is a big feast and plenty for everyone to eat. Some people like to keep the horns and paint them.
