J. & G. Meakin was known for the ironstone china it produced for the domestic English market and export to Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the United States. Founded in 1851, the company survived into the 1960s, eventually purchased by the Wedgewood group in 1970. Ultimately, as has happened too many times, the original factory eventually ceased production and was demolished popular in 2005.
This beautiful tureen is an artifact of the history that was the J&G Meakin English Pottery manufacturing company. Although the company, the factory, and those that comprise its existence have since passed into history, artifacts like this remain to share its tale—at least a small sliver.
This tureen is a worn piece inside. It has several hairline cracks that spread amongst its inner core (see pictures). It goes without saying that its days of harboring piping hot soup and other liquid concoctions have since passed. However, with its original beauty still intact, re-purposed this tureen makes for a wonderful planter, centerpiece, or container. Sold as/is, we proffer this antique tureen for decorative use only.
This tureen measures 11.5"L x 8.5"W x 6.25"H with the lid on.
WHY WE LOVE IT...Repurposed Decor
Salvaged, refurbished, repurposed, whatever the means, we love the practice of preserving the past and protecting our environment. In this case, using a beautiful antique tureen to furnish a modern home is not only charming, but it's also smart. One less item in a landfill and one more historical artifact saved to be admired both now and in the future. How can you not love that?
