Offering a wonderful Bilston and Battersea Halcyon Days enameled musical trinket box featuring concert pianist Paul Whiteman at the piano, with New York City as a backdrop. The Reuge works plays George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, which, the interior cover notes, was commissioned for Whiteman's concert in 1924.
The oval box is decorated around the sides with a variety of concert instruments alternating with sprays of flowers, against a blue pastel ground.
This rare, Limited Edition box is numbered 484/750.
The Reuge, Swiss made mechanism is marked both in the interior of the works and on the key.
The base is marked “Halycon Days Enamels, England, Bilston & Battersea Enamels Revival.”
Size: 2-7/8" long.
Condition: The box winds and plays properly (please wind slowly and do not overwind for continuing enjoyment). However, there are chips on the back of the box, two that go down to the copper, and one that is only down to the white layer (shown in photos 6 & 7). Also, the brass mounts holding the cover has come loose from the bottom. This can be remounted if desired; meanwhile, the lid popular hinge works properly, and the mounts and cover seat properly on the box. The gold on the beaded rim could use a slight detailing. It presents perfectly from the front.
