In John's Gospel, Mary Magdalene manifested her intense devotion to Jesus by anointing the feet of Jesus with perfumed oil and then drying His feet with her hair. While all the apostles except John abandoned Jesus at his crucifixion, Mary Magdalene was among the group of women at the foot of the cross.

This stunning Catholic medal, dating back to 1960s France, features popular on the obverse a depiction of Mary Magdalene weeping at the foot of Cross after the crucifixion of Jesus. She is depicted weeping as she wipes with her tears and hair the precious blood that flowed from Jesus' feet that were nailed to the cross. The image is surrounded by the Latin text lifted from Canticle of Canticles (Song of Solomon Chapter 2) "Sub umbra illius quem desideraveram sedi" which translates to "I sat down under his shadow, whom I desired."

On the reverse is the facade of the Abbey Saint Magdalene of Barroux (South of France, in Provence) viewed from a distance. Around the circumference is the Latin inscription "Domine dilexi decorem domus tuae" which is lifted from Psalm 25 and translates to "I have loved, O Lord, the beauty of thy house." The abbey of Sainte-Madeleine du Barroux is also known as Le Barroux Abbey. It is a traditionalist Benedictine abbey located in Le Barroux, Vaucluse, France. It was founded in 1978 by Dom Gérard Calvet while the current abbot is Dom Louis-Marie de Geyer d'Orth.

Crafted in silvered bronze and marked so on the bottom rim. Measures about 2 7/8" in diameter.
