This is a popular tanzaku-sized framed art depicting Showki.

【The Legend of Showki】
The showki is the ancient Chinese deity
It is believed that displaying the image will ward off disease and evil spirits.
It is also known as the god of academic achievement.
The following legend explains why the showki was enshrined

The young showki takes the exam to become a high-ranking official.
He passes the test with the first, but because of his large body and bearded face, and because of his poor physiognomy, the emperor fears him and rescinds the test.
In despair at this, showki committed suicide.
Later, the emperor catches malaria and is tormented by the Little Demon in his dreams. Then the Great Demon appears and exterminates the little demons in the blink of an eye.
The Emperor asked the demon who helped him, and the demon replied, "I'am showki.
He said that he committed suicide because he failed his exams, but he was buried so generously that he vowed to repay the favor and rid the world of its ills.
When the emperor woke up from his dream, he found that he had recovered completely from his illness, and hurriedly asked the painter to paint the showki that appeared in his dream, which he kept as a precious treasure.
