Product code: Antique French Earthenware Dripping Pan, popular Saintonge 19th Century

This beautiful ochre glazed earthenware pan is known as a dripping pan, or lèche-frite, and was a container that would have been placed under a spit that was roasting meat, to catch the fat and juices. Formed in an oval shape, with pouring spouts at both ends, it has a stubby hollow handle that would have had a wooden extension. The interior of the pan is glazed in a golden ochre and the handle and exterior are unglazed.

Dating from the 1800s from the area of Saintonge popular, now Charente-Maritime, in southwestern France, the aged patina is unmistakably authentic for this utilitarian piece. Gracefully aged, there are scratches on the interior from years of use, burn marks from the fire, chips to the rim and a crack.

A beguiling antique display item for any rustic, farmhouse, or French inspired interior. For decorative purposes only.
