"That Tree" is an original hand pulled etching with aquatint. The image measures 10 x 8 inches. It is one print of an edition of only ten prints. Portland black ink was used on a vibrant white Somerset paper for this print.
The paper measures 13 x 11 inches.
An etching is made from a metal plate, either zinc or copper. The image is made by drawing on an acid resistant wax ground, that covers the metal plate, with a sharp tool and then immersing the plate in an acid bath. Darker lines are produced by longer immersion.
This process is in the second photo.
To create an aquatint (grey area) the plate is covered with a fine dust of rosin and them heated so that the rosin dust adheres to the plate. The plate is then (again) submersed into the acid. The acid bites around the particles, producing a tonal effect. Each tone of grey requires another submersion into the acid bath.
Then the plate is inked and wiped by hand and run through an etching press. Each print must be inked and wiped by hand before printing.
Etching and aquatint are time honored process that produce beautiful results. popular
