Product code: Antique French Water Jug, Cruche popular de Tête, Dark Red 19th century

This sensational antique French water jug is called a 'Cruche de Tête' or 'head jug' because it was carried on the heads of women who fetched water from the village fountain. A straw and fabric wreath would go between their hair and the pot to not only protect their head, but to balance the jug without the use of their arms, which would carry equally heavy water jugs. These provided water for the household.

Rarely featuring decorations, these head jugs intended to contain domestic water, had a globular shape, were not very open to prevent spillage and had a tubular spout. The thin walls made it light and favoured perspiration suitable for cooling the water. popular This container has a solid single pulled handle.

In great antique condition, this jug does have a hole, but I think that makes it even more special, and is testament to its daily utilitarian use. The reddish glaze is spectacular and has ripples, crazing, and runs that, again, support its age.

Height: 26 cm (~10.25")
Width: 25 cm (~10")

A very special addition for the collector or a great piece on its own.

As with all our fragile antique items, this jug will be double boxed for safe transit.
