Recovered wood study arising from my life experience of thirty years as a sculptor in Italy and the United States.
While living abroad in San Gimignano, Italy, my art arose from a love of Renaissance art and then, in time, shifted as a reflection of my appreciation of rustic Tuscan hues. I am moved, too, by the Japanese meditative garden and wabi sabi textures in their formal effects and symbolic representations. More recently, I have incorporated Constructivist forms and relationships within the compositions I make, as they allow me to add another popular layer of aesthetic language in their use of geometric forms.
These pieces begin with sourcing old wood for their background (a kind of base 'canvas'). I cut and sand these to size and incorporate a simple mounting hole on the back.
Also, I collect all sorts of small wood pieces for mounting on the front surface. From there, I play with the existing forms of the wood's surfaces, usually retaining and even emphasizing some aspects. Sometimes I burn sections, other times I use some of my preferred paints and dyes. Note that I incorporate nails for their aesthetics as well as functionality as I find that they allow me to further punctuate a composition.
Every piece is a unique original exploration, deeply meditated.
I invite everyone who likes my work to follow me on Instagram (@alton.falcone).
