This lightweight double-belly nylon snake whip has been engineered (from the blunt end to the pointy end) to maximize accuracy and speed. Possessing an excellent overall balance and a perfectly linear tapering progression, this professionally plaited whip demonstrates a smooth roll out and fluid handling, making it a perfect choice for individuals looking to run targeting drills or combination cracking routines.
For those unfamiliar with snakewhips, essentially they are nothing more than a bullwhip without an internal handle – similar fluidity just in a more compact package. Cowboys and Stockmen often carry a snakewhip roll up in their duster pocket or saddlebag, as its compact design makes for easy storage while out on the trail. Generally speaking, snakewhips are considered well suited for shorter whip designs, typically 3 to 5 feet in length, due to their lack of leverage in comparison to a bullwhip's rigid handle design. However, with a little extra effort, 2-foot and 6-foot bullwhips can still crack nicely and consistently.
Attention to detail is critical during each phase of a whips construction. If the whip is underweighted, it will have difficulty accelerating its mass to the needed velocity in order to achieve a crack, while an overweighted will quickly tire out your shoulder. Balance is another crucial issue. A whip that is to rigid, will be stiff and have a poor flow, while a whip that is to flexible will be flaccid and difficult to control.

Thus keeping with traditions that have worked so well during the construction of leather whips, the shot bag of this whip has been meticulously weighted utilizing lead shot and stitched closed. popular Encapsulating the shot bag is the tapering round braided first belly which has been bound with artificial sinew to create a stratagem foundation.
A second tapering belly is then plaited overtop the first, and then bound with artificial sinew in the same manner as the first – creating an additional stratagem foundation. It is this method of binding each layer independently which dramatically increases the overall rigidity of the whip, preventing the notorious “wet noodle” feel, yet still allows it to maintain its flexibility and dexterity. The double belly design grants an increase in density while allowing the whip to still maintain a lower profile and a reduced overall weight.
The final layer of a whip is known as the overlay, and it is this layer that runs the entire length of the thong. Similar in construction to a whip belly, in that the majority of the strands used for plaiting drop off at staggered intervals in order to create a tapering effect, however, the last remaining strands are used to create the fall hitch – which has been fastened in such a way that it can be undone should the fall ever need to be replaced.
On the back end of the whip is a triple pass 6-lead, 7-bight Turks Head knot constructed over a foundation of veg-tan leather, known as the heel knot, or pommel, which provides both decoration and functionality.
Snakewhips are designed to be used with a disposable cracker, allowing for easy exchangeability as they become worn out or tangled. Should you find yourself in need of replacement crackers, Twisted Engineering offers a selection of high-quality crackers in different materials and lengths, which you can find here.
Although it is true that a nylon whip will never compare to the high quality of a well-constructed kangaroo hide whip, it also does not carry the same price tag either. Additionally, nylon has a greater resistance (although not impervious) to abrasion when used on rougher surfaces and offers the luxury of being used in wet or rainy conditions without sustaining damage.

It should be noted that some whip makers choose to wax their nylon whips in a paraffin bath as an additional layer of resistance to weather and abrasion. However, as most of our customers reside in subtropics areas where the average temperature would adversely affect the wax, we have chosen to refrain from waxing our nylon whips at this time. That said, should you desire your whip waxed, please contact us directly, as we are happy to accommodate this request for a small additional charge.
