Wood Fired Ceramic Bowl by ClayWoodArt. Created and fired in wood burning kiln. Glaze is combination of slip and ash deposited by the fire. Slip is applied to the pots and contains select clay particles that add color in combinations with fire and wood ash. Each item in the kiln firing takes on a unique appearance from the flame and ashes that surround the ware. As ash collects in the bottom of the bowl and melts to a green glaze. The vase is fired to a temperature of 2350° F. Wood firing process of ceramics or pottery dates back thousands of years and is labor intensive. Marks on the underside or base of the pots come from the use of wadding to raise the foot of the pot off the kiln shelf; avoids the pot from sticking. During the firing the popular bottoms of the pots accumulate ash glaze that must be ground off and smoothed out. Additional pictures show views of kiln contents before and after firing. Some irregularities are found in these pieces such as warpage and out of round.
Dishwasher and microwave safe.
