Ghana was once called the Gold Coast due to the abundance of precious metal found in the region. Beaded gold necklaces were worn by members of the Asante Royal families during festivities. The beads were both abstract and representational in form. Often identified with the Asante peoples, these geometric forms could also be used as weights to measure gold dust during trades.
This set is inspired by the African jewelry collection at the Penn Museum.
