Nutmeg Mills was started in the early 1980s by the Jacobson brothers from East Longmeadow, Massachusetts. The brothers began hiring ex-athletes to pitch Nutmeg apparel to their alma maters. It was a winning strategy from the start. Suddenly schools like UF, Florida State, and Michigan were selling sweatshirts, tees, and other gear—and turning solid profits. The fast-growing company differentiated themselves by creating design-driven upscale sportswear and eventually added licensing agreements with the National Football League, the National Basketball Association, the National Hockey League, Major League Baseball, the NCAA and major colleges and universities. In the late 1980s, Nutmeg Mills went public and by the early 90s, the company was making hundreds of millions of dollars per year in revenue. In 1994, the brothers sold Nutmeg Mills to VF Corporation, one of the largest clothing conglomerates in the world, for more than $350 million.
