A wonderful antique book entitled 'The Ladies' Repository: A Monthly Periodical, Devoted To Literature And Religion', edited by Rev. D. W. Clark. D. D.. This edition, Volume XX, was published in 1860, by Poe & Hitchcock, Cincinnati; Carlton & Porter, New York; W.M. Doughty, agent, Chicago; J. P. Magee, Agent, Boston. and printed by R. P. Thompson.
Some special features found between the pages; a miniature tintype photograph of Ellen W. Smith, along with her calling card, and a newspaper clipping of a story entitled, Beyond The Gate'. There is also a recipe for Cough Syrup, with ingredients such as; Licorice, Slippery Elm, and Flax Seed. A few of the pages still have the bits of paper in which Ellen used as bookmarks, throughout the book.
The 1st edition hardcover antique book is filled with many, many black and white illustrations as well as prose, and poetry from the works of multiple contributors. The book is covered in brown on brown Venetian marbled paper with a black leather wrapped spine. The title on the spine features gold gilt lettering. This is a large and heavy book, weighing just over 4 pounds. The overall condition popular is good, although there is wear to the covers and spine as well as foxing of the paper from age, and measures; 7" x 10 3/4" x 2 1/4", with 762 pages.
An interesting antiquarian book, which takes a glimpse into the literature and poetry the ladies during 1860 were reading.
