Handmade Quilted Stained Glass Modern Gothic Window Wall Hanging, 38” X 20”.

This quilted wall hanging has the look of a stained glass church window.

Before I learned to sew “stained glass” fabric pieces, I wanted to try this gothic window design on a wall hanging. I am a quilter, but I had never made a quilted wall hanging before, nor had I tried to make a template or sew curves. However, my growing collection of vibrant jewel-toned colors motivated me. I really didn't expect this baby to come out! It was just for practice. But I love it's simplicity and bright colors, especially on cloudy days, and I plan to make many more.

The gothic design makes me feel like I have my own little peaceful church corner.

To prepare to piece this window together, I searched the internet for anything similar. I wanted a pattern, but I found nothing. Why is there no pattern? I'll add that to my list of Things To Do: make a pattern that anyone can download, because I believe that everyone should be able to whip one of these windows together, playing with colors and designs. In any case, when I could not even find a wall hanging that looked something like this, I turned to YouTube for lessons on how to print an image poster-size, how to sew curves, and how to add binding to a quilt that is curved. I then selected the fabrics, cut them according to the templates I had made, and started piecing them together with black strips of fabric. The hardest part was getting the strips of black “grout” or “lead” to appear continuous, and many seams were ripped out and re-sewn.

After the top was pieced together, I cut a black backing and sandwiched the two together with cotton batting in between. I used my little sewing machine to quilt everything together, adding some experimental triangles on the back for hanging purposes. As with all my quilts, the binding was the last and most exciting step, and I sewed that on by hand.

This wall hanging is not perfect, and that's OK. Perfection is not good.

The quilt is super easy to hang. On drywall, I simply use 3 thumbtacks, inserted through each popular of the hanging triangles, but you could add a dowel to the back instead. Simple Command strips also hold it up easily on any surface, including masonry. It's super lightweight, washable, and 100% cotton.
