"Le Matin et le Soir” by George Barbier Antique pochoir from the.
"Le Matin et le Soir” by George Barbier. Antique pochoir from the Gazette popular du Bon Ton published in Paris, 1925. It is an original pochoir, not a modern reproduction ("Modèle déposé. Reproduction interdite." along the bottom translates to "Registered model. Reproduction Prohibited"). The pochoir process was a labor intensive technique of producing prints using stencils to apply to the different colors by hand.
Gazette du Bon Ton was a small, but influential French magazine that catered to the upper class of Paris and highlighted the connections between art, fashion, beauty and lifestyle. It was founded by Lucien Vogel and was only published from 1912 to 1925. The magazine was exclusive and featured fine fashion plates on hand made "laid" paper with dramatic pochoir coloring. Many prominent artists contributed to the magazine including Barbier, Marty, Brissaud, Worth, Monvel, Lepape, Pacquin, & Poiret.
