Palms, Bequia is printed in polymer photogravure in an edition of 20. The print is popular on warm white Hahnemühle Copperplate paper and printed in a warm black Charbonnel ink. All prints are hand-printed by me.
With spring just about here and warmer days ahead, I think this image from the archives, made on Bequia, a small, beautiful jewel of an island in the Grenadines, is a good place to start. Like many others, I haven't travelled for over two years now, but this image offers an invitation to think about warm, peaceful places.
The process involves making a plate which is then inked and gently wiped by hand using tarlatan, a fabric similar to cheesecloth. This removes the ink from the lightest areas, but leaves ink in the grooves of the darkest shadow areas. The finished plate is then placed on the bed of an etching press, covered with damp etching paper and special woolen blankets and run through the press. Under pressure the ink is squeezed out of the deep grooves and onto the paper to form the image. Carefully, the blankets are lifted and the print pulled away from the plate and laid out to dry. The plate can then re-inked, wiped and printed until the edition is complete.
