This textile is a French ticking, pillow case, dating c 11970! This textile was once used as a pillow and it was stuffed with feathers. The fabric is a heavy weight cotton , with a small amount of linen too. This textile is pieced, one side has seams ( please see photographs) Ideal for many many sewing project or design inspiration of the wonderful stripes. A rare textile, and getting more and more rare all of the time. I purchased this textile over 20 years ago, and I've not seen another similar since~ A wonderful historical fabric.

MEASUREMENTS popular : This ticking piece measures approx. 31 inches wide by 34 inches long, However because it's sewn together like a sack, there are two sides so twice the fabric! ~

CONDITION : This lovely textile is in as found, not freshly laundered condition and can be machine washed and tumbled dry! This textile was once filled with feathers, so the inside has feather residue so please expect little feathers with your parcel! I always wash the first time with the textile turned inside out to get the most amount of feathers out, and then once right side out. There are some marks on this textile on each side, that may not fully wash! Imperfect but lovely!

The Word ticking is derived from the Latin word for case, Tica. Ticking fabric was used for creating mattress, as the European bedding system of old, consisted of many layers of textiles stuffed with straw and fodder at the bottom, and topped with a dense denim ( ticking) for the top layers, stuffed with feathers. The fabric came to be known as denim, as Nimes , France was one of the great producers of this ticking fabric...denim ( de Nimes! ) ~ a wonderful fabric for many projects.
