The artist:
Amos is an emerging artist whose dynamic works capture the abundance of plant and animal life that is central to Kunwinjku
hunting and ceremonial practices. He regularly leads painting workshops for the Kakadu National Park's Seasonal Ranger Program. Amos produced his first screenprint design for the Injalak studio in 2013. Amos has an intellectual disability however that does not prevent him from being a valued member of the art centre.
The design:
This dynamic design captures the abundant life of the estuarine rivers of West Arnhem Land. Salt water mixes with the fresh, animals migrate between the creeks and the ocean, the tide rises and falls. It is an environment in constant flux. Many animals depicted here, like kinga (saltwater crocodile), namarnkol (barramundi) and njarlkan (archerfish) are equally at home in salt water and fresh water. The rich environment and numerous fish support a wide variety of birds, and this design includes makkakkurr (pelican), djilikuybirr (whistle duck), kawk (night heron) and bonbon (pied cormorant). Nawarlah (river stingrays) and karlkki (tadpoles) can be spied here in the muddy shallows. Ancestral beings and spirits inhabit these waters as well, and amongst the animals in this design Yawkyawk (fish-tailed female water spirits), Ngalyod (the Rainbow Serpent) and Mimih spirits can be seen.
