Antique Barbotine Majolica Plate Salins Pearl Luster Glaze Doves Roses 8.25" Made in France VG Cond
This late 1800s majolica plate is slip glazed in a delicate celadon green with slight pearl luster. Its intriguing and unique freeform popular pattern has both indented and embossed flowers floating about -- mostly roses in delicate pinkish tints, each with a center ring of golden stamens, on brown stems. The buds, flowers, stems and leaves are well-delineated. On the left side sit two fluffed up birds (perhaps doves) within a separate circle of textural flowers.
The Salins Majolica company operated in France in the 2nd half of the 19th century. They were well-known for their beautiful slip-glazed (Barbotine) wares.
8.25" diameter
"R" chop mark on back
Condition notes. Uneven glazing (characteristic of this type of majolica). A very small glaze chip and rough area on the back of the rim, not visible from the front. Very light wear on front. Overall very good condition.
Will be very carefully shipped with $200 insurance
