Fabulous Antique French Plaster Bust Statue made in the early 1900s The subject.
Fabulous Antique French Plaster Bust Statue made in the early 1900s. The subject, Léon Clergue, is better known as the Franciscan Father Marie-Antoine de Lavaur (1825-1907) who became known as the Saint of Toulouse (our nearest city from here). There is good info on Father Marie-Antoine on Wikipedia and elsewhere.
He was a good man, who spent many of his 82 years fighting for the poor & the religious. Not officially among the blessed yet, the process is underway (It was 500 years before Joan Of Arc officially became a Saint) Images of Father Marie-Antoine are easy to find. The bust is a splendid image of him. It is painted in dark greens and gold, giving the effect of bronze. He is original, unrestored, and signed by the sculptor.
