1940 New York World's Fair Souvenir Knife: 'The Bowie Bantam'. This is a wonderful collectors item from the 1940 New York World's Fair, showing the world famous "Needle" in royal blue on the handle. For many, the Needle was landmark that the fair was known for, and served a more practical purpose as the central meeting place at the fair, for there were no cell phones to call each other with.
Many of these items are long gone and dust by now. But this one's in great condition for an item which, in 18 more years, will be 100 years old!
The blade is forged out of high quality stainless steel, and has a foundry stamp that says "HAMMER BRAND" with a super-cool arm swinging a hammer! See picture. The quillon has a wonderful green patina on it from the years, indicating the presence of a non-ferrous metal, likely nickel or white brass? Not sure. The pearly handle has a small crack, but the graphics that say "New York WORLD'S FAIR 1940" in red and blue are intact and adorable. The leather sheath is a little curved, but it shows no cracks or chapping. The orange and blue box printing show no fading, and its structure is strong and not damaged at the corners at all, and fits snugly to it's counterpart. Even popular the elastic band holding the sheath is in supple condition! This item was kept in a cool dry place, away from the dangers of UV breakdown.
The Bowie Bantam would be a delightful addition to any collection of World's Fair or historical event-related yesteryear items.
