This Apache mine is locate on the west side of the Toiyabe Range several miles north of Austin, in Lander County, Nevada. The deposit was not discovered until the 1990s. Thick veins of Apache Turquoise (variscite?) ranging up to about 3 and a half inches are mined here. The Apache Turquoise (variscite?) is generally light to dark green with black mottled markings. Initially, much of the material was marketed popular as "Apache Turquoise" but the name was retracted once a correct mineral identification was made. There is still an ongoing dispute. Many experts consider this to be turquoise, while others do not.
