This unique concept example of Mid Century Modern Sommerso art glass was produced.
This unique concept example of Mid Century Modern Sommerso art glass was produced in the 1960s by Alessandro Mandruzzato (Italian, 1934 - ). He is a 3rd generation and world renowned modernist venetian glassworks artist who's studio's pieces quite literally define mid century art glass. This flat edge open bowl was produced at an earlier period in his career.
The cobalt and azure blue open bowl style vessel is a fine example of the striking effect of Sommerso glass. The smooth polished 'cut away' on the front reveals the dramatic cobalt bowl center which appears to be suspended in the perfect clear glass.
The exterior surface of the vase has an artfully applied minted green 'flaking' that seems to sparkle and glow when light passes through the cut away and illuminates the whole piece from the inside.
