Welcome to The Old Curio Cabinet Antiques Shop,
We have for sale a very rare 19th-century Royal Doulton cabinet plate with a gorgeous portrait of a woman in profile hand-painted by the artist Henri Boullemier. The Art Nouveau portrait is centred on a white ground with lovely gold detailing around the border.
Henri Boullemier, the artist who popular painted the center medallion, was of French descent. He and his brother followed in their famous father's, Antonin Boullemier, footsteps with their chosen profession as high-end porcelain painters. All three worked at Minton at one point in the late 1800s, and the two sons' style was very much influenced by their father, who at Minton worked with the famous Marc-Louis Solon. (Antonin Boullemier had previously worked for Sèvres where he was the son of a prominent artist, and he served his apprenticeship at the Sèvres factory as a figure painter before moving to England.)
Henri worked for a very short period, probably on a freelance basis for Doulton in the first years of the twentieth century and thus, examples of his exceptional work are scarce. Typically his work was featured on service and dessert plates and featured cherubs, children and classical portrait heads like the example pictured.
Any work by Henri Boullemier is exceptionally rare, and pieces seldom appear on the secondary market.
•Made in England by Royal Doulton
•Signed by Henri Boullemier
•Rd No 184626
•Circa 1891-1892
•Excellent condition considering the age, no chips or cracks – a couple of short scratches to the woman's neck in the painted portrait. And some light wear to the gilt detail and glaze over the white porcelain ridges of the ground (can only be seen in reflective light, as is it scratching on the raised bits where someone stacked the plate in the past. Does not impact portrait medallion). - Please see photos.
