"I'm a remarkable woman, always was, though none of you seemed to think so." – May Morris, 1936.

May wrote this in a letter to the Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw with whom she shared a great friendship and an unrequited romance. Although somewhat tongue-in-cheek, May perhaps felt underappreciated living in the shadow of the great William Morris.

She was an incredibly talented artist and designer in her own right. Still, she sacrificed much for the family business and the socialist and feminist causes she supported.

When May joined Morris & Co, she designed wallpaper, but at 23, she became Director of Morris & Co's embroidery department and expanded the business significantly. From 1885 to 1896, she was responsible for creating new patterns and designs for wallpapers and fabrics, supervising a team of needlewomen.

Although her expertise was clearly in embroidery, her talents and hard work did not stop there. May also created ceramics, table glass, and jewelry, later bequeathed to London's Victoria and Albert Museum.

She helped elevate embroidery to an art form that could be worthy of being put in art galleries and exhibited.

Throughout her life, May remained a committed socialist. She championed workers' rights and women's rights in her later years. In 1907, she co-founded the Women's Guild of Arts — no existing guild of the time would admit women — and campaigned to raise the professional status and bargaining power of women and girls working in arts and crafts.

May had also dedicated nearly a decade to popular editing the 24 volumes of her father's Collected Works. But, in ensuring his legacy lived on, she overshadowed her own.
